Temporary 4th of July Outfits

If you walk through any clothing store right now they have some of the cutest 4th of July clothes on sale and they are cheap.  $4-$8 dollars for a top or bottom.  No big deal for most people.  Well, in this household we are working on a strict budget thanks to Dave Ramsey.  Last weekend when we were having our weekly management meeting (me and hubby) he informed me there was $0 left in the clothing budget.  GASP!  I pleaded with him that I still haven’t purchased 4th of July clothes for the kids and I wanted them to wear something cute and special.   He simply said “when it is gone, it is gone.”  Darn, Dave Ramsey.  Hubby also said “ you are creative, do something creative.”  After a little bit of sulking (internally, he was right) I remembered his encouraging words and was able to come up with a solution!

I got my creative groove on and I think I hit the jackpot.  I can’t buy my kids new clothes but I can make their current clothes into TEMPORARY 4th of July Outfits.  The reason they are temporary is I did not want to transform a perfectly good garment into something they would wear one day!  Then I would have to repurchase a staple garment and I would be back to spending money in the clothes budget!

Temporary 4th of July Shirt for my daughter…

I took a plain white shirt of hers and added star buttons on the neckline and sleeves.  I knew there was a reason back in 2009 I bought these buttons.  I purchased them for 10 cents a pack, SCORE!  When 4th of July is over I will cut them off.  Simple as that!

Shirt and Buttons

With scrap material, and an old headband I made her a 4th of July Headband. This is not temporary but it will be something I keep for her little sister one day and it cost me $0. Since I made it with stuff I have at the house!

Then I needed to make something for my little man.

Wesley 4th Outfit

He looks like he walked out of a Ralph Lauren shop!! Ha!!

I  transformed a pair of his shorts that I made for him last summer (I love elastic) to be patriotic shorts!!  I purchased a pack of American Flags at Target 3 for a $1 a while back and took the cloth flag off the stick.  I slipstitched it on all 4 corners on the pocket to cover the whale applique.

Temporary 4th of July Clothes

You could do this same technique and put the flag on a shirt.  When 4th of July is over all you need to wash your garment just cut your stitches.  It is that simple!!

There you have it two ADORABLE Temporary 4th of July Garments for the kids and I did not spend a dime out of our clothing budget.  I think the best part of the story is Hubby was so proud of me for stepping up to the challenge!!

If you notice I only shared with you 2 of the 3 kids 4th of July Outfits.  Sweet Cailyn has not been forgotten!  I will post pictures of her outfit soon.  However, it is not temporary but I did make it for $0 and it is SO CUTE!! I can’t wait to share.

Have a fabulous 4th of July.

CUTE! zero dollars, adorable outfits what more can you ask for! I am adding a vintage lady liberty graphic to a t for my little girl - the shirt has a stain (I cannot get out) and the image will cover it up!
